Commercial Pilot The commercial pilot certificate allows a pilot to receive financial compensation for his/her services as a pilot. The commercial certificate is generally obtained after the instrument rating.
Job Opportunities The new commercial pilot (assuming she / he also has a CFI & CFII) is most qualified to flight instruct, a position which helps build time while gaining valuable experience. Other job possibilities include banner towing, aerial photography, hauling skydivers and the like. New pilots may also be employed by freight/charter companies or airlines.
Commercial pilots are prohibited from simply renting or buying an airplane for the purpose of carrying passengers for hire. Such activities are regulated under Part 135 and are strictly enforced by the FAA. Part 135 activities are typically carried out by charter/freight companies which complete a comprehensive, cumbersome application process to gain the privilege. It is inadvisable to seek clever ways around these rules as attempting to do so can result in serious enforcement action and loss of license.
Once you have gained the necessary experience as a commercial pilot (approximately 1,000 hrs for IFR with 200 multi) you are ready to apply for a pilot position at a regional airline.
