Instrument Instructor (CFII)

The certificated flight instructor - instrument (CFII) rating is required by most flight schools in addition to the CFI to be considered for employment as a flight instructor. It is added to the CFI certificate and allows the holder to provide instrument instruction.

Completion Time & Cost
The CFII takes approximately a week to complete (10 flight hours) and the minimum total cost at North-Aire is approximately $1,930.00.

Requirements Summary: 61.191

  • Must meet the requirements of 61.183 (CFI requirements) that apply to the  rating sought;

61.183 for the CFII.

  • Read, speak, understand, and write English;
  • Hold a commercial or airline transport pilot certificate (ATP) with an aircraft rating appropriate to the flight instructor rating sought;
  • Hold an instrument rating, if the person is applying for an airplane or an instrument instructor rating;
  • Receive a logbook endorsement from an instructor on the fundamentals of  instructing listed in 61.185;
  • Receive a logbook endorsement from a flight instructor on the areas of operation listed in 61.187b;

  • Receive a logbook endorsement from an instructor stating that the applicant  is competent and possesses instruction proficiency in stall awareness, spin entry, spins and spin recovery after providing instruction in those areas;
  • Demonstrate instructional proficiency in stall awareness, spin entry, spins  and spin recovery. (not necessarily in the airplane);
  • Log at least 15 hours PIC in the category and class of aircraft appropriate  to the rating sought.

Note - generally applicants add the CFII to their existing CFI certificate. As a result, many of the requirements listed above will have been met prior to training for this rating so it's not as bad as it looks.

** For example, to add a CFII airplane to a flight instructor  certificate the applicant must hold a pilot certificate for airplanes. The holder of a pilot certificate that specified "glider" or "helicopter" cannot  apply for a CFII airplane.
