The private pilot certificate qualifies a person to act as pilot-in-command of an aircraft carrying passengers and baggage. The private pilot (who does not hold an instrument rating) may only fly under visual fight rules (VFR) --only under good weather conditions-- and may not receive compensation for his/her services. If your interest in flying is limited to afternoons out on nice days, the private pilot certificate will meet your needs. If your goal is to become a professional pilot or to fly for business purposes, however, you will need to earn additional ratings and certificates.
Completion Time & Cost Completion time of the private pilot certificate depends on the frequency of training. Students training 2-3 times per week can expect to spend up to four months in training. Students training 5-6 days per week can complete it in 4-6 weeks. Many schools offer private pilot programs designed to allow the student to complete the certificate in 4-6 weeks. The average total cost at North-Aire is around $6,130.00.
Certificate Requirements In terms of flight hours, the FAA requires the student to log a minimum of 40 hours (Part 61) or 35 hours (Part 141). However, most students require approximately 55 hours to achieve the necessary proficiency. Keep these hour requirements in mind when selecting a training facility. Some school base their course prices on FAA minimums, while others base the price on actual hours needed to complete the certificate.
